It was seven-ish and I was sitting in a nice-enough room overlooking the front entrance to the pub above which I had just moved in. The pub was the Pig and Whistle on Soi 7 in Pattaya. Across the way was a large hole, which they were hoping to construct a hotel in and next door to that, just opposite me, was a small bar with one woman sitting on a stool outside it. Not that there was a wall there, it was open on two sides. The Soi was lovely and quiet, I thought. I also thought that I might go and sit in that little bar and talk to that woman, if my friend was late, because I would definitely see him arrive from two metres away, the width of the Soi.

So, I went to the bar in the pub at 19:15 to await my friend who said he would arrive at 20:00. It was much busier than thirty minutes earlier but not noisy and I sat at the bar. The first thing a barmaid did was say hello, give me a menu and step back. I did not really want to eat, I only wanted a beer as I assumed we would be eating together later, but I wanted to read the menu anyway.

‘A pint of Boddington’s’, I said. It arrived and the girl started laying a place for me. I tried to say that I was not hungry, but it was no good. Like in Spain, most people eat and drink at the same time. All the while the girl was smiling at me. Then she said: ‘You live upstairs? My name Charli. What you want to eat?’. So, I gave in and ordered something and rice.

‘You first time in Thailand? You no can eat. Too spicy’, she said with a grin. ‘Oh’, I replied, ‘but I want to try. ‘I put only 50-50 for you’, she declared and went.

I battled my way through that meal and it took a Boddingtons and a bottle of water. Charli had been accurate, it was too hot for first-time foreigners and she had reduced the chilis by 50%. I have always heeded a Thai’s guidance on food ever since.

I changed seat to by the window to see what was happening as it was dark by 19:30 and I was curious. Within thirty minutes Soi 7 had changed completely. I could see hundreds of ladies and tourists milling about. I wanted to go out and join in or at least sit in the quiet bar across the way, but I’m ashamed to say that I was too scared, so I sat put, rivetted to the Pig like a rabbit in a hunter’s beam.

My friend arrived on time and after we had been chatting for an hour, he said: ‘Drink up, I have someone I want you to meet’. This was it, we were going into that mele. A waitress held the door for us and the racket and the heat were terrific. Particularly the noise. Every metre at least two or three girls would shout: ‘Hello, sexy man, you want a drink’. Trying to say no courteously to each request was impractical, so I just stuck close to my pal.

Fortunately, we only had about fifty metres to walk and we sat down in another bar. My friend said hello to several ladies and then said, this a girl I have been going out with for some time. I was astounded as I had never heard him talk about her, ever. She was gorgeous, but could not speak English, so I sat in the din in silence. Not for long through, as my friend said, I have a blind date for you and he introduced another girl to me who was equally beautiful, but with whom I could speak a little. She was captivating and I was captivated. The din seemed to pass away, but it was only because I was listening to my new friend. The four of us had the best time and the best food I had ever had in my forty-nine years of existence.

One area often overlooked by those mulling over a new direction is the concept of ‘training segmentation’. This is essentially the breakdown of the materials for drop-shipping to you, which vastly changes the point you end up at.

You may think that it makes sense (with training often lasting 2 or 3 years for a full commercial certification,) for your typical trainer to courier the courseware in stages, until you’ve passed all the exams. But:

With thought, many trainees understand that the company’s ’standard’ path of training isn’t as suitable as another. Sometimes, a different order of study is more expedient. And what if you don’t get to the end within their exact timetable?

Ideally, you’d get ALL the training materials right at the beginning – so you’ll have them all to come back to in the future – whenever it suits you. You can also vary the order in which you complete each objective as and when something more intuitive seems right for you.

With all the options available, does it really shock us that a large majority of newcomers to the industry don’t really understand the best career path they should even pursue.

How can we possibly grasp the tasks faced daily in an IT career when it’s an alien environment to us? Most likely we have never met anyone who does that actual job anyway.

Ultimately, any kind of right conclusion can only grow via a detailed study across many shifting areas:

* The sort of individual you think yourself to be – what kind of jobs you enjoy, and on the other side of the coin – what you definitely don’t enjoy.

* What sort of time-frame do you want for the retraining?

* Have you thought about salary vs job satisfaction?

* Many students don’t properly consider the work involved to get fully certified.

* The time and energy you’ll set aside for getting qualified.

At the end of the day, the only real way of covering these is by means of a long chat with an advisor who knows the industry well enough to be able to guide you.

Watch out that all exams you’re working towards are recognised by industry and are up-to-date. ‘In-house’ certificates are generally useless.

If your certification doesn’t come from a major player like Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco or Adobe, then you’ll probably find it will be commercially useless – because it won’t give an employer any directly-useable skills.

The most significant market sector in the United Kingdom that can satisfy a trainee’s demands is the computer industry, particularly IT. There is a requirement for greater numbers of qualified workers in this sector, just check out any job site and there’ll be a long list. But don’t think it’s full of techie geeks looking at their computerscreens all day long – it’s much more diverse than that. Most of the people in the industry are just like you and me, and they have very interesting and well paid jobs.

Let’s admit it: There really is no such thing as personal job security now; there’s only industry and business security – as any company can drop any single member of staff if it meets the business’ trade needs.

However, a quickly growing market-place, with a constant demand for staff (due to a big shortage of commercially certified people), creates the conditions for true job security.

Reviewing the computer market, the recent e-Skills study brought to light a twenty six percent shortage in trained professionals. Accordingly, out of each 4 positions available in IT, organisations are only able to find properly accredited workers for 3 of the 4.

Properly qualified and commercially accredited new staff are thus at a resounding premium, and in all likelihood it will stay that way for a long time to come.

Surely, now, more than ever, really is such a perfect time to join IT.

The age-old way of teaching, using textbooks and whiteboards, is an up-hill struggle for the majority of us. If all this is ringing some familiar bells, look for learning programmes that are multimedia based.

Where we can get all of our senses involved in our learning, then the results are usually dramatically better.

Modern training can now be done at home via easy-to-use DVD or CD ROM’s. Through instructor-led video classes you’ll take everything in via the demonstrations and explanations. You can then test yourself by utilising the practice lab’s and modules.

All companies should be able to show you a few examples of the materials provided for study. Expect video tutorials, instructor led classes and many interactive sections.

Avoid training that is purely online. Physical CD or DVD ROM materials are preferable where offered, as you need to be able to use them whenever it’s convenient for you – ISP quality varies, so you don’t want to be totally reliant on your internet connection always being ‘up’ and available.

The world of information technology is amongst the most thrilling and changing industries that you can get into right now. To be working on the cutting-edge of technology is to be a part of the massive changes that will affect us all over the next generation.

Computer technology and connections via the web is going to spectacularly change the way we live our lives in the near future; profoundly so.

A standard IT man or woman in the United Kingdom is likely to get noticeably more money than his or her counterpart outside of IT. Mean average remuneration packages are amongst the highest in the country.

The good news is there’s no easing up for IT jobs development across Britain. The market sector continues to grow hugely, and with the skills shortage of over 26 percent that we’re experiencing, it’s most unlikely that there’ll be any kind of easing off for years to come.

Far too many companies only look at the plaque to hang on your wall, and avoid focusing on what you actually need – which will always be getting the job or career you want. Always start with where you want to get to – don’t make the journey more important than where you want to get to.

Avoid becoming one of the unfortunate masses who choose a training program that seems ‘fun’ or ‘interesting’ – only to end up with a qualification for an unrewarding career path.

Get to grips with the income level you aspire to and what level of ambition fits you. This will influence which accreditations will be expected and how much effort you’ll have to give in return.

Seek guidance and advice from a skilled advisor, irrespective of whether you have to pay – it’s much safer and cheaper to investigate at the start if a chosen track will suit, rather than realise after 2 years that the job you’ve chosen is not for you and now need to go back to square one.
