The United States Virgin Islands

Friday, May 13th, 2011

The US Virgin Islands came into America’s possession in 1917 after Denmark sold the Danish West Indies to it for $25m in gold. At the time, the USA was worried that the Germans would gain control of the islands and use them as a base from which to launch attacks on America.

The status of the US Virgin Islands is one of an organized, unincorporated territory of the United States. This means the residents of the US Virgin Islands are US citizens, but cannot vote in US presidential elections. Therefore, US citizens do not need a passport to visit the US Virgin Islands.

The US Virgin Islands are part virgin Islands archipelago and are located in the Leeward islands of the Lesser Antilles along with the British Virgin Islands. The three main islands of this American territory are called Saint Croix, Saint John and Saint Thomas. There is also a much smaller island called Water Island. All together, there are about 60 islands with a total surface area of 133.73 square miles, although most of the islands are uninhabited.

The four main islands of the US Virgin Islands are known to their residents by nicknames. These are ‘Twin City’ (St. Croix); ‘Rock City’ (St. Thomas); ‘Love City’ (St. John) and ‘Small City’ (Water Island) and their total population was 108,612 in the 2000 census.

Since the 1960’s, the islands turned their focus from agriculture to heavy industry and tourism and the US Virgin Islands are a very popular destination for American tourists and honeymooners. It is very easy for Americans to get there because a passport is not required, the islands are only 1,730 miles east south-east of Miami, the currency is the US dollar and everybody speaks English.

The islands enjoy an arid, pleasant climate. The average temperature in the capital, Charlotte Amelie, is 33c in the summer and 30c in the winter. September to November are the wettest months and February and March are the driest. The USVI are subject to hurricanes. Hurricane Hugo in 1989 was particularly devastating, but the islands were also hit in 1998, 1999 and 2008.

Tourism is the industry that most of the islanders are engaged in and about 2,000,000 people visit every year, many of them on cruise liners. St Thomas and St Croix are the best equipped to deal with tourists offering hotels and resorts along with lovely beaches and fine restaurants. Water sports are the main activity, although tourists can also hire horses or jeeps to discover the interior of the US Virgin Islands.

Veteran Marklin Toy Trains Are Classics

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

There are people who collect toy trains or model trains as some may call them. As you can expect most of them are men and many would say that they are in still in touch with their childhood.

This is not to mean that they are childish, it is not a criticism. Some collectors display their collection at fayres, while others are content with showing them off to friends at home.

However one attribute that they all share is enthusiasm. Collectors of train sets tend to get very enthusiastic about their hobby, often dedicating a whole room or more to their trains. One of the classic trains that no collector would not like in his collection is a Marklin, which were first manufactured in 1891. Classic Marklin trains are high up there on a collectors wish list.

Marklin was the first manufacturer of toy trains that produced standard gauges, but a number of different models of trains and matching accessories. This really started the hobby of collecting toy trains, because you could purchase a train and some track and later buy more track and a carriage of a different train and run it on the same track. This strategy also had the effect of permitting less well healed families to buy a train set for little Arthur.

Marklin train sets are really a part of history, but they are beautiful too. And rare. It is standard to pay thousands of dollars for a single item. A complete Marklin station including a rare Marklin 2609 was sold at auction in America for $110,000. The station was superb and the train and its carriages had been hand painted, but it is still a immense amount of money for a train set.

The original estimate for this train set and station was around $30,000, which was considered right because it was virtually unique. A European and an American collector battled at the auction to the finish with the American winning in the end. The station and the carriages had tables with individuals sitting at them reading the paper and drinking tea or coffee.

However, that was by no means the only Marklin that went for over what was hoped for. There was a gauge III Marklin 2609 in the auction too and that went for $82,500. It was a beautiful, hand-painted steam engine in extreme detail. The original price set for this item was $25,000. Several other Marklin pieces were sold at the auction and none of them sold for less than $25,000.

So a Marklin train set is certainly something to look out for next time you go to a garage sale or a church bazaar. However at a 120 years old, you are not likely to find a Marklin train set or even a solitary locomotive, but jolly good luck luck in your search.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a number of topics, but is now concerned with American Flyer train sets. If you would like to know more about train sets for kids, please go over to our website for some great offers.

Collecting Antique Dolls

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Collecting antique dolls is a hobby that a lot of women grow into or would like to if they had the time or and the money. A collection of antique dolls in a gorgeous display case is a very attractive asset, but collecting antique dolls is not as easy as it might sound.

Well, to define that properly, it depends what you would like the antique dolls for. As with any hobby that has the capability to make the collector money, it is not easy to get it right, but if you only would like to enjoy your collection you will have an easier time of it.

Millions of women collect old dolls, but it is doubtful that any large number of them actually make any money out of their hobby, because you have to study and the professional competition is fierce. It is the same as collecting coins or stamps: you can have a beautiful collection of pretty commemorative stamps or coins that is worthless in monetary terms, because there were too many of that type or that year manufactured, whereas you could have a collection of a dozen dreary stamps worth a million.

Therefore, if you would like to begin a collection of antique dolls, the first thing to do is visit the library and borrow some books on the issue. If there are no pictures, you can probably find some photos on the Net in order to make identification easier.

One of the first things you require to acquaint yourself with is the names of the most famous makers of dolls in the 150 years of the Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries. Learn the names of the firms, the names of the dolls and an average cost.

If you come across what you think is a good deal at a car boot or yard sale, do not be put off by a shabby appearance. lots of dolls lead a tough life, but they can be repaired fairly easily and there are many dolls’ hospitals if you require expert help, advice or specialist parts like eyes or buttons. The original clothing can be repaired or replaced and the doll would still be valuable if it is rare, popular or sought after.

You know, some things are not particularly rare but are still costly because they capture the imagination of a great deal of people. Baby Boomer toys from the Fifties and Early Sixties will almost certainly acquire this status when the Boomers retire and maybe begin a collection.

Look out for antiques fairs to help you acquire more first hand knowledge. There are often specialized antiques fairs in largish towns and one sort of fair is antique toys, in which the section on antique dolls is certain to feature quite prominently. It is very functional to be able to see the dolls ‘in the flesh’ so to speak in order to know what you should be looking out for while browsing.

Books, photos and the Internet are useful resources, but there is no replacement for hands-on experience and talking with collectors and dealers who are fanatical about collecting antique dolls.

Blogging As An Art Form

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

If writing is an art form, then blogging can be seen as an art form as well. Blogging is no less an art form than regular composing articles merely because it is more popularist and does not require paper. Bloggers compose articles on all sorts of things, in fact they write on each subject under the sun. Bloggers write about their daily lives, their jobs, their hobbies and their concerns.

Blogging began life in the mid Nineties for webmasters to maintain a record of their involvement with their computers, which is where the term comes from: ‘web log’. Web log became weblogs and then it was contracted to blog. Web logs soon became a well-liked manner of recording and publishing other daily activities on line, much like a diary.

Blogs can be posted to a URL like a website is, or they can be posted to a free bloggers’ web site. There are lots of these free blogs, but one of the most famous ones is Google’s ‘Blogger’.

In spite of being free of charge, Blogger offers a fully flexible blog which can hold adverts like Google Ads and Amazon, so that the blogger can offer related things for sale and earn a little money at the same time.

If personal blogs are used to talk on daily life, business blogs can be used as rolling adverts for a firm’s products. The manager of the company’s blog can write on innovations, new products, jobs available and special offers. The company’s blog can be used as a private press release machine which can reach a worldwide audience.

If you would like to make a blog for personal or business use, you will have to know something regarding blogging, so here are a couple of pointers.

This first thing to do is define what your blog is going to be about. If it is a business blog then that is easy, but a personal blog should have a target audience. It ought to appeal to a niche group. Strive to keep the niche group fairly tight, blogs that waffle on colossal sprawling topics are not as well-liked.

For instance, stamp collecting is far too wide a topic. Collecting British stamps is better, but British commemorative stamps of the 20th Century is even better. Include some images to keep the blog looking cheerful and colourful. This is easily done since most modern printers have a facility to scan images and send them to your computer.

In the blogosphere, information is the name of the game. Most people surf to gain information. They surf to get the solutions to problems that they are experiencing; in order to help with their hobbies or only for general information. Therefore, you should make your blog a bearer of useful information.

You can make your blog interactive by allowing your readers to leave comments. Some software allows fairly lengthy comments so that visitors can leave their opinions in full. This interactivity will encourage readers to come back to follow the discussion.

In fact, most blogging software will actually inform the leaver of a comment that there has been a reply and it will also collect the commentator’s email address so that you can add them to a mailing list as long as you provide them with the ability to opt out of the list if they want to.

Effective Methods To Start Blogging

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Everybody has something to say and most people are passionate about something that they would like to talk about. Individuals would like to take this desire to talk a couple of stages further – they would like to tell the world about it. That was impossible less that twenty years ago, unless you managed to be on TV or were syndicated in the world’s press. Now, of course, anyone can do it.

The Net makes it possible for everybody to have their say. The young and the old, the rich and the poor can discuss what they like on the Internet. You can use a website as your soap box or you could use a specialized web site known as a blog. If you cannot have your own web site for any reason, you could open a free blog at one of the numerous web sites that offer free blogs.

The word ‘blog’ is short for ‘web log’ and adding an article to your blog is called blogging. Blogs have become a very effective way of spreading one’s point of view. The latest kind of blogging is micro-blogging, which is the generic description for Twitter.

Blogging has been used effectively by inhabitants of countries where the provision of human rights is not a government priority. Just recently, dissidents in Iran, Iraq and Myanmar have kept the world up-to-date on repression in their countries through blogs. The blogs were frequently reprinted in the world press and reported on the International news.

If you would like to blog for free, search Google for ‘free blogs’ and take a look around. There are dozens of free blog sites about and they all offer different functions. Blogger by Google is one of the better ones, but there really are loads of different types of free blogs.

One consideration is whether you want your blog to be open or closed. That is, do you want anyone to be able to read it or do you want only a closed user group (CUG), which could include your friends, your family or your colleagues.

It should not take longer that thirty minutes to set up your blog. Some providers like to approve new blogs, but others do not. You could be blogging within the hour, so compose an piece welcoming people to your blog and post it to the blog. Make it ’sticky’ if you can, so that it is always the first post that visitors read when they arrive at your blog.

Make your posts informative and attempt to keep them topical. They should neither be so short that it is not worth coming to read them nor so long that they get boring – 400 to 500 is judged to be about right.

You will need to promote your blog or no-one will know that it is there. Do this by posting your pieces (with your blog address affixed) to a few article directories. It is free and will give your blog a real boost in circulation. You can give up doing this when your blog is self-sustaining.

Allow all visitors to leave comments on the blog, because it encourages them to come back, but check frequently for spam comments and delete them because a blog full of spam looks neglected.

Cooking: Five Tips

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

There can not be a lot of individuals who do not like their food, but the human race, being what it is, I expect that there are a a small number of them. Nevertheless, for the rest of us, food is a source of every day pleasure and, like a beverage, it is often used to commemorate a celebration. not only that, but different foodstuffs are used for the different meals or distinct celebrations. Commemorative meals were indubitably planned around the seasonal foods available, but some foodstuffs were ferried huge distances for the consumption of those who could pay for them.

For instance, my Dad deemed it a grand luxury to be given an orange in his stocking on Christmas Day sixty years ago. How the times have changed! Very few kids would deem an orange a present, special or otherwise, any day of the year these days.

Nonetheless, the preservation of food is still a daily affair and therefore, I have written a few good guidelines on preserving foodstuff below, so that you will obtain the best from that which you have bought or grown in your garden even a long while later.

Chicken Stuffed With Spoons: a great way of preparing chicken to be eaten at a cold buffet or in sandwiches, is to put as many spoons as possible into the cavity of the chicken (not silver or plated ones though). Then, place the chicken in a large saucepan or pot and bring the water to the boil slowly. Simmer for 10 minutes, cover and leave until the water is room temperature. The spoons will retain the heat and cook the chicken from the inside out. it will be one of the most succulent chickens you have ever eaten.

Roasted Crisp And Light: if you like crisp-skinned roasties, it is best to parboil them first, but that is only half the story. so, boil the potatoes for five minutes and drain thoroughly. Put the lid on the pan and shake it about violently. Bang it hard on the chopping block several times. The harder the better. Then put the parboiled potatoes in the baking tray with the meat or fowl to cook as you would normally.

Salad Soup: Do not throw away salad that has been soaked in salad dressing. Whisk it up in a food processor with a can of tomatoes of tinned soup. Add lots of garlic to taste and adjust the thickness to suit your taste. Chill it down and you will have one of the most delicious summer soups ever.

Curdling Cure: if your mayonnaise has curdled there is one sure fire way to bring it back to life. stir in a couple of tablespoons of Hellmann’s mayonnaise and your problem will be over.

Simply Scrumptious Topping: a really, quick, delicious and almost infinitely variable topping for a savory pie can be made in seconds. Choose the flavour you want from the crisp rack; puncture the bag to let our the air and then crush the contents in the gag. it really adds something to a pie. The same trick can be used on the bottom of a potato pie a Texan housewife told me.

Gadgets For Your Garage

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Are you a garage person or a shed person? Do you like your garden or your vehicle more? If you liked your garden more, you would have lots of gardening gadgets in there in order to make your gardening life simpler, so why not stock your garage up with gadgets for your garage, if you prefer to spend your time with your car.

The kinds of gadgets for your garage on hand would be those that can be used in the garage and those that can be taken on the road with you in the vehicle or the truck. Specialized tools are some of the most common gadgets to have in the garage and the vehicle.

One of the most popular gadgets for your garage or vehicle is the distance sensor or parking sensor. This gadget can be fitted to your garage rear wall or fitted to the front and back bumpers of your vehicle. These sensors are wonderful if your vehicle has blind spots, if the light is bad or if parking space is tight.

These parking sensors are very easy to install and can be fitted DIY by practically everybody who can use an electric drill and twist a screwdriver. When the device senses an object at the limit of its range, it emits a beep, but as that object comes closer to the sensor, the beeps get louder and more frequent. With a little practice, you will soon be able to park your vehicle inches from a wall or another car.

An electric garage door operator is another notable labour-saving device, particularly on dark, wet or stormy nights. Women in particular are often frightened of getting out of the car to open the garage door at night, so this gadget for the garage door can also be considered a safety gadget as you can secure the garage door behind you as well before getting out of your motor vehicle.

If you or the children have bicycles, they can account for a great deal of storage space and you can easily back over one of them with your car. Unless, of course you hang the bicycles on the walls around your garage. These gadgets for garages are fantastic space-savers.

If you need still more storage space, you can get storage devices that can be pulled up to the ceiling and dropped back down again for access to them. These gadgets for garages are particularly useful for storing items that you do not use very frequently, but cannot bring yourself to throw away.

Then there are gadgets for the garage that have more to do with your means of transportation. An air compressor is extremely handy. It can be used for driving power tools and cleaning off the engine and blowing the mud out of the wheel wells. Needless to say, you can also inflate your vehicle and bicycle tyres with it too.

A temperature gun is also useful for testing the quality of your brakes and tyres as well as bits of your engine for undue wear and a radar detector is handy for those who just cannot keep the pressure off the throttle.

What Are The Benefits Of An All-Inclusive Vacation?

Saturday, April 9th, 2011

If you are planning to go on vacation this year, how are you thinking of doing it? There are several alternatives to explore, if you begin planning early enough. There are the self-planned, ‘I will find a hotel when I get there’ style; there are cruises and there are package vacations.

The self planned is for those without children and is more bold. Cruises are wonderful, if you like being on the water more than being on land and there are the package holidays, some of which are all-inclusive package vacations.

If you choose a vacation package, you have the alternative of looking for an all-inclusive resort or an all-inclusive hotel. There is not much to choose between them, if you are going alone or with your spouse, but if you are taking children, the all-inclusive resort is the one for you.

This is because all-inclusive hotel rooms can be on the small side and if you have a small child or even children with you, your room will soon become overcrowded and suites are more highly priced. An all-inclusive resort, on the other hand, will normally offer accommodation in the form of cabins or chalets, which are designed with young families in mind.

You do not want to be staying on the 12th floor of a large hotel with toddlers, because either they have to stay in the room until you want to go out, in which case they might get grumpy or they might learn how to get out and wander off in the hotel. A chalet, however, will inevitably be on the ground floor, frequently be in groups, so that you can help keep an eye on each other’s kids and may even have a small garden with a fence.

Whether you go to an all-inclusive hotel or an all-inclusive resort really depends on whether you have or can put up with children. If you have children then a resort is for you, if you do not like children’s noise, then you would be better suited to an all-inclusive vacation in a hotel.

Once you have selected your type of all-inclusive package vacation, the rest is plain sailing. Actually what is all-included in these style hotels and resorts can differ quite widely, so you should make sure you know well in advance. Price is a good indication. If one resort at the same destination is much cheaper than the others, look into it more carefully before booking.

Often the difference will only be in degree. For example, an all-inclusive hotel or resort may offer the free use of diving gear, but when you read on it might restrict that to non-mechanical diving apparatus, so you only get a mask, snorkel and flippers. Others may only have ten units of equipment – first come first served.

However, having said that, most all-inclusive package vacations are fantastic deals. They include your transport to and from your home town to the destination, which depends on you and where the resort is of course. For St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands transport could be by cruise or flight – you must determine that at the outset. Having to travel 500 miles to Orlando by bus or train with three young children might not be much fun.

When you arrive there, they almost always include all your meals and snacks and all soft drinks, tea and coffee, beer and non-branded spirits. An all-inclusive will also include all fees to on-site entertainment. That means the, pool, the club house, pool, snooker, table tennis, the gym etc, and access to any private beach attached to the hotel. It will also include night time shows usually.

The Advantages Of A Swimming Pool

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

A swimming pool is an attempt to create a safe, handy environment in which to swim. However, they are quite costly to install and to maintain. If you live in one of the temperate zones, it is probable that you can find a river, lake or stretch of sea to swim in during the summer months. If you live in the tropics then you can swim all year round but the waters are likely to be more perilous.

So, a swimming pool is an excellent alternative. Public swimming pools are all right, but you have to pick your times carefully or the water is full of discourteous kids frolicking about or old individuals simply standing in the way of dedicated swimmers.

This can be very maddening and frustrating, which are two of the emotions you went to the pool to divest yourself of after a hard day. You can actually come out feeling more frustrated and annoyed than you went in.

The solutions are: join a private swimming club or spa; build your own pool; or marry someone who is rich. If you have the money, the best option of all is to own your own pool.

Although a swimming pool is expensive, it is not money wasted. Not just will a swimming pool encourage you to adopt a (more vigorous) fitness regime, a well-manufactured swimming pool it will also add hugely to the value of your property.

People like to move into a home with a pool, because then they do not have to put up with builders and mounds of soil and jack-hammers and dumpers and noise for weeks and weeks on end.

Even better is if the pool has been properly cultivated with trees and bushes in the right places to supply shade if required and sweetly scented flowers and bushes to provide wonderful smells wafting over on a breeze. All this should be set in a well-manicured lawn.

It is likely that you will have to have some kind of pool fence, depending on where you live, so check on that, but put the fence as far back from the pool as you can or are allowed. You do not want to feel hemmed into your swimming pool.

There are two options with pools; above and below ground. But there is no real choice if you have the space and money – it has to be below ground every time.

One of the cheapest options of underground swimming pools is to use fibreglass. It is a far cheaper way than a lot of people know. In fact, it passes most people by because they do not know about it. However, imagine all the labour it saves on butyl liners, waterproofing, tiling, grouting, etc.

The fibreglass pool is dropped into a hole and then you paint it – blue or green or turquoise, if you cannot make up your mind; tile the surround and you are done. Then it is on with your favourite swimming costume and in you go.
