Archery Bows: Some Aspects

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Archery played a large part in human daily life for thousands of years from prehistoric times until about 1750, when the gun began to supplant it for hunting and warfare very rapidly. Peoples all over Europe, north Africa, like Egypt, Persia (Iran), India, China and Japan remember their most skillful archers. I am sure that other countries do too.

Wales produced Twm Sion Catty; England had Robin Hood and Switzerland had William Tell. Greek and Trojan archers are told of by name in Homer’s ‘Iliad’. Archers all over the world were thought of as popular heroes like footballers are today.

It seems that bows were first developed in different parts of the world practically at the same time in the late Paleolithic Age or the early Mesolithic Age. It is interesting that different forms of bows were invented by the different societies around the world and each type of bow was invented to suit the style of warfare that that people conducted and to the environment in which they hunted.

There are too many types of bow to give details of them all here, but some of the most conventional archery bows are: the longbow, flatbow, shortbow, recurve bow, compound bow and crossbow.

The longbow and the flatbow are similar in size, both can be six feet or more in length, but the cross section of the longbow is ‘D’ shaped, whereas that of a flatbow is rectangular. A flatbow is usually wider than a longbow. Both can shoot heavy 36 inch arrows long distances with great force – enough to penetrate the armour of the Middle Ages from 250-300 yards.

The shortbow is shorter, as you might gather from its name. It is a short range bow, utilized for hunting small animals in regions where a large bow would be too unwieldy such as in woods or forests.

The compound bow is also a shorter bow, but it is extremely powerful because the limbs are not very flexible. In order to flex the limbs, use is made of a system of pulleys or cams.

This gives the compound bow sufficient power (more than 50 pound draw weight) to enable it to be used to hunt bigger game such as deer or bear. The compound bow is a new style, which was only invented in 1966.

Recurve bows have tips that ‘point the wrong way’ when the bow is unstrung. This gives the recurve more power inch for inch than the long or flatbow, allowing it to be used as an effective weapon for warfare or hunting from horseback.

Crossbows are specialized bows, which can be pre-loaded like a gun and shot later. In general, it takes less skill and physical strength to use a crossbow.

The arrows are very important too. Arrows can be interchangeable between the bows to a certain extent, but the length should suit the draw of the bow. Crossbow bolts are normally very short.

There are two kinds or shooting: instinctive and sight shooting. Sight shooting means using sights of some kind to aim, either by looking down the arrow or using optical fibre sights. Instinctive shooting is more demanding because it is intuitive. It cannot be learned, you have either got it or you ain’t.

Owen Jones, the author of this article writes on several subjects, but is presently concerned with compound hunting bows. If you would like to know more or for special deals, please go to our website at Kids Archery Set.

How To Protect Yourself In The Garden During The Summer

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

The summer is the time for barbecues, backyard parties, lounging in the backyard or bathing in the pool. It is also the season for insects, normally of the flying variety. Flies and mosquitoes can become everything from mildly annoying to downright dangerous. So what can you do to protect yourself in the garden during the summer?

The first thing to do is start clearing up your garden before the summer starts. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water and it only has to be a half-inch deep. This means that you should keep the gutters free from fallen leaves and other blockages.

Blocked gutters and drains are major breeding grounds, but so are all items that can hold rainwater. Flower pots, buckets, old tyres and folds in sheets are others.

Drill holes in pots, containers and old tyres; pull tarpaulins tight, upturn boats and canoes and if you have water features, make certain that there are either guppies or goldfish in there as well, because they are famous for feeding on mosquito larvae.

Making a pre-emptive strike on mosquito breeding grounds will radically lessen the number of mosquitoes in your garden and thereby reduce your liklihood of being given West Nile virus (in the USA). It will also protect you against E.coli.

However, your neighbours may not be as fastidious as yourself, so mosquitoes will still come into your garden. To protect yourself from these spray insect repellent containing DEET (25% +) on your clothes and exposed skin to avoid mosquito bites.

In the twilight, hang a bug zapper with a blue light and an electrified coil in the environs of where you are sitting. The best ones also use pheromones to attract mosquitoes, particularly octenol.

Some species of mosquitoes hang about animals, so rub some natural mosquito repellent on your dogs or do not allow them to lie at your feet.

Do not use DEET on them because they will lick it off and become sick. Use citronella oil, lemon oil or garlic. There are lots of others as well, but they are not as effective or as long-lasting as DEET.

If you are cooking, and who would not be, be cautious of meat, particularly chicken and pork. If the meat is frozen, thaw it gradually and keep it in the fridge until minutes before you are going to cook it.

The risk zone is between 40-140F, when bacteria will grow very quickly and flies will lay eggs in it. If you have to store the meat out of the fridge, store it ‘under water’, that is, in a marinade, so that flies can not get at it and it is out of strong sunlight.

Keep food and drinks apart, so that the fridge is not opened so frequently as to permit the temperature to rise above 40F. Use two sets of kitchen tools, one to deal with uncooked meat and fish and one to take cooked meat and fish off the flames otherwise you will contaminate the cooked food.

Use a meat thermometer to check that the foodstuff is cooked: 160F for meat and 165F for chicken. Discard cooked food not consumed after two hours or after one hour if the ambient temperature is above 90F. If you want to use marinade up on cooked food, boil it first.

After all, it is not as straightforward as it seems to obtain sports wear for the participant of a sport you understand nothing about.

There is a certain picture we are inclined to associate with a tennis player: white Polo top with shorts or skirt and matching shoes. They are trendy and stylish, comfortable and characteristic at the same time. Items of tennis clothes often signify a great deal to people who are not just sports fans. If the person you are shopping for is a tennis aficionado, tennis attire becomes a great gift that can also be quite reasonably priced despite the rumors that it costs a great deal.

In case tennis attire is something unknown to you, Google it over the Internet and you will be amazed to see how much information there is on hand. Very many forums will tactfully let you know you about prices and deals going on at various retail shops and online merchants.

They will also supply you with information as to which brands are thought the best, which are considered the least hard-wearing and reliable, which are reasonably priced and which exaggeratedly over-priced .

What many tennis outfit wearers recommend is that you procure the type of top or shirt that will make you feel most comfortable and that would permit the very wide angled movements that are specific to the practice of this sport. For instance, the shorter the sleeves of your tennis apparel, the freer the movement during the game. Some procure tennis kit also according to the season in which they intend to play. Still others go for the materials that can be worn in both warm and cold seasons.

They strongly believe that the tennis attire ought to keep them both warm and cool at the same time. As far as the t-shirts for men are concerned, you must know that most players speak of Polo shirts in very high terms, as the collar offers you some neck protection from the sun’s rays.

Is She A Bitch Or A Lady?

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

So you may wonder, what is in a dog’s name? Just what does it matter what your female dog’s name is? The answer is a fair bit, because your bitch’s name defines him or her in the eyes of your neighbours, especially if you have a small dog. What small dogs lack in stature they can make up for in attitude. For small dogs, being cute will get them everywhere. But what is a cute dog without a cute dog name?

Cute dog names are usually meant for female dogs. Abby, for example is a very cute dog name. When you put that together with an image, you probably see a little Westie or a Labrador pup running around a lawn in your mind’s eye. Other cute female dog names are Brownie, Beauty, Becky and Blackie. All of these cute dog names seem to embody a bundle of fur that has a sweet nature and just loves cuddles. They all speak of a pretty appearance and a very happy dog owning experience.

However, there appears to be rather few cute dog names out there for male dogs. This may be because it lessens the masculine image that male dogs should have. Still, there are a few cute male dog names about. Bobby, (Old) Nick, Patch and Tigger are all cute male dog names that have the same effect as the female ones do. However, you do have to ensure that you have the right kind of male dog to name with a cute dog name, because if you get it wrong, it will make him sound silly.

Cute dog names can be appropriate for male and female members alike of certain breeds and can help to develop a lovable personality, because of the affection, with which it will be handled. But do be warned, you do not want to leave your dog open to ridicule so pick when to give your dog a cute dog name with caution.

Whilst dogs are very intelligent creatures, they cannot process the same quantity of information that humans can. As a result, dog names should never be more than two syllables. If they are more than that, it is seldom that a dog will respond. Max, Sam, Lady, Molly and the like are excellent dog names because they are short and the syllables are hard. They easily respond to dog names like those and it can increase your prospects of training them.

Moreover, dogs names can assist them shape an identity of their own. Common names do not allow them to do that, so finding a simple but unusual name can help their characters a great deal without hurting their ability to respond to a command.

I am quite willing to bet money that most dog owners do not think of the factors outlined above when thinking of dog names for a new pet. Instead, dog names are chosen at random, but it is worth putting a bit more thought into it, for your dogs mental health if nothing else.

The Advantages Of A Swimming Pool

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

A swimming pool is an attempt to create a safe, handy environment in which to swim. However, they are quite costly to install and to maintain. If you live in one of the temperate zones, it is probable that you can find a river, lake or stretch of sea to swim in during the summer months. If you live in the tropics then you can swim all year round but the waters are likely to be more perilous.

So, a swimming pool is an excellent alternative. Public swimming pools are all right, but you have to pick your times carefully or the water is full of discourteous kids frolicking about or old individuals simply standing in the way of dedicated swimmers.

This can be very maddening and frustrating, which are two of the emotions you went to the pool to divest yourself of after a hard day. You can actually come out feeling more frustrated and annoyed than you went in.

The solutions are: join a private swimming club or spa; build your own pool; or marry someone who is rich. If you have the money, the best option of all is to own your own pool.

Although a swimming pool is expensive, it is not money wasted. Not just will a swimming pool encourage you to adopt a (more vigorous) fitness regime, a well-manufactured swimming pool it will also add hugely to the value of your property.

People like to move into a home with a pool, because then they do not have to put up with builders and mounds of soil and jack-hammers and dumpers and noise for weeks and weeks on end.

Even better is if the pool has been properly cultivated with trees and bushes in the right places to supply shade if required and sweetly scented flowers and bushes to provide wonderful smells wafting over on a breeze. All this should be set in a well-manicured lawn.

It is likely that you will have to have some kind of pool fence, depending on where you live, so check on that, but put the fence as far back from the pool as you can or are allowed. You do not want to feel hemmed into your swimming pool.

There are two options with pools; above and below ground. But there is no real choice if you have the space and money – it has to be below ground every time.

One of the cheapest options of underground swimming pools is to use fibreglass. It is a far cheaper way than a lot of people know. In fact, it passes most people by because they do not know about it. However, imagine all the labour it saves on butyl liners, waterproofing, tiling, grouting, etc.

The fibreglass pool is dropped into a hole and then you paint it – blue or green or turquoise, if you cannot make up your mind; tile the surround and you are done. Then it is on with your favourite swimming costume and in you go.

Archery Tips For Novices

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

There are two main points that an archer has to do well to guarantee the best chance of consistently hitting the target. The first is to hold the string stable at full draw until the archer is ready to shoot and secondly, releasing the string in the correct manner every time. Most suggestions for beginners should help the novice to achieve these two states.

‘Creep’ is the first issue that a beginner should safeguard against. Creep is the phenomenon of the arrow, string and hand creeping forward as the archer takes aim. It is vital to keep the arrow at full draw for consistency. If the archer permits the hand to creep forward, the shot will not be consistent. Creep is caused by lack of concentration and strain.

The strain comes from attempting to shoot a bow that the archer is not yet physically powerful enough to control. People, especially men often attempt to shoot a bow that is too powerful for them. If an archer is experiencing creep, the bow is probably too powerful for him or her at the moment. The archer ought to use a weaker bow and exercise more until they are stronger.

The effects of creep on the shot are that the archer will not learn how to determine the fall of the arrow over distance and so will almost certainly undershoot, that is, the arrow will possibly fall short. The only way to learn how to use the bow properly is to always shoot at full draw.

Tiredness can also lead to creep, but the archer can regulate this by resting well before a competition, staying fit and not using a bow that takes so much muscle that it cannot be shot for the period of the competition.

The beginner archer has to learn how to release the arrow as well. It is much more difficult to hit the target if the release is not correct. The novice should get an experienced archer to give a demonstration of the release so that he or she does not acquire bad habits. The proper way to release the string is to relax the muscles in the tips of the fingers used to draw the string.

Beginners often hurt their fingers after a few releases, so they try to let go of the string too rapidly which can lead to pulling the string to the side a bit. This little shake can send the arrow off course.

The release should be clean and to the rear of the arrow, not to the side. If the release is to the rear, the arrow will fly accurately to where the archer pointed it. If the archer is having a lot of trouble hardening up the finger tips, it is possible to use a string release mechanism, which will take the strain off the finger tips until they can be hardened up.

An archer could try the karate techniques of hardening the skin and the hand. One of these is to plunge the straight fingers into sand. An archer could also try a guitarists’ method, that of daubing the finger tips with methylated spirits from time to time.

Fashionable Dog Names

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

Fashion seems to dictate everything nowadays days. From what you wear to what you call your dog, everything you do is decreed by the need to be fashionable. Cute dog names are hard to come by and even harder to choose. This is because no sooner is something in fashion, than it is out again.

Who would want to pick a cute dog name that may not be fashionable next year? So, people usually play it safe, which is why the same names have been so popular for so long. To try and break that cycle, five cute dog names are given below with our reasons why you should choose one of them for your dog.

Phoenix: What could be cooler than a bird that goes up in flames and then rises from the ashes? Phoenix is one of the cute dog names that will never go out of fashion because it is rooted in mythology. It has a timeless quality which has surprisingly failed to boost its popularity.

Star: Star is one of the cute dog names because it has so many meanings that you can have a hard time finding out where to start. A star in the sky is a phenomenon and a star can refer to someone that outperforms in a certain field. It is a high form of praise and thus is definitely a cute dog name.

Lady: Lady is one of the most popular dog names but it is also one of the cute dog names because of the Disney cartoon film, Lady and the Tramp, which was a massive hit. The film made the name popular but also gave it some credibility. In this case, popularity comes second to coolness.

Elvis: The coolest of cool dog names. Elvis Presley was undoubtedly cool and remains cool today even after his death. It is immeasurably cool to name your dog after such a tremendous star who has never gone out of fashion himself.

Shadow: There is a dark and mysterious quality about Shadow that makes it a cool dog name. It would be best used on a large breed of dog however, because it wouldn’t have the same striking effect with a small one.

Whatever cool dog names you consider for your mut, it is one definite way to give your dog an identity of their own and make your dog unforgettable to others.

Can You Fast For Fitness?

Friday, October 29th, 2010

A lot of people do not understand their bodies. That much is obvious because they think that fasting will help them become fitter. They feel convinced that their bodies will feed off their surplus fat and that they will lose weight as a result. They also appear to imagine that they will automatically end up with more muscle, just in the right places too. Some take up fasting for fitness because they think that it will rid them of the toxins in their bodies.

Another belief that these fasters have is that they are will be able to flush out all of the toxins in their bodies by drinking plenty of water at the same time as not eating food. Even if this is true, it would be a long procedure that would mean that you would have to fast for at least five to seven days though in order to conclude the detox process, although it is still not clear scientifically whether fasting is the right approach for those that desire fitness.

There are many other paths to fitness that do work well though. For example, you can cut back the amount of food that you eat. Cutting back is not fasting, it is dieting and it is not only far more effectual, it is also far less difficult. This, together with drinking plenty of water and increasing your amount of physical exercise will help you to get fitter.

If you drink a lot of soda like cola or lemonade, which are full of sugar, like a lot of kids do, or lots of cups of sugared tea or coffee, like a lot of adults do, then just replacing those drinks for water or weak tea will help you lose weight fairly rapidly even if you do not make any other changes to your diet or your amount of activity.

It is also possible to damage your body if you embark on a strenuous exercise routine only relying on body fat to keep you going. Your body probably will not be able to deliver enough energy to fuel such a change, because your metabolism will be too low.

Someone going about it in this way, can become very weak and dizzy. It is not a good idea to risk injury because you have not given your body all the fuel it needs to complete the tasks you are requiring it to perform.

It is better to consult a doctor before you make any alterations to either your diet or your fitness routine. Confer with your doctor about your thoughts on fasting and fitness. They will be able to inform you whether they feel it is something you can try or whether it is just too risky.

Fasting is all right if you have do it for religious purposes, but do not attempt much physical exertion. Ask a Muslim how he or she feels during Ramadan! Fasting for long periods can lead to high blood pressure and even liver damage. So, be very wary before attempting to starve yourself fit, there are much better ways.

Bowling And Weight Control

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Bowling is a sport that can become quite emotional and because of that, it can also be used to relieve stress and tension. It is a good way to let off steam for people who lead a stressful life and have a high pressured job. Aside from these benefits, bowling can be a useful element in your weight loss program.

After all, you get to move a lot of your body muscles in bowling. It keeps you physically active, so you burn calories as well. Therefore, not only are you getting some physical activity, but you will be getting rid of some excess fat too. It will help keep your back, leg and arm joints supple, especially if you are over 50.

If you take part in this sport, you will be almost assured to keep your body in top condition. Depending on how much weight you have to lose and how often you play bowls, you may be able to give up your other weight control exercises.

That would suit most dieters as it is the exercising that bothers most people. It would also save you money as you will not have to pay to use a fitness center and buy work out clothes and track suits. The best thing to do would probably be to join a neighborhood team. These teams usually have local competitions, so you might be required to play twice a week.

The weight control advantages of bowling fall into the following categories.

Light muscle toning is achieved by normal bowling actions like walking, bending and swinging your arm in order to loose the ball. This is just like when you exercise by walking, which is one of the best physical exercises. Bending and swinging your arm to bowl is also good for your joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Furthermore, it also promotes good blood circulation. So, overall, bowling is a fun way of exercising and losing weight at the same time.

Mild fat burning will be achieved by the actions of walking, flexing, stretching, and swinging. If you play often you will be losing weight on a regular basis too. It can be extended by walking to and from the venue of parking your car half a mile away from the club. Walk up and down any stairs involved, do not take the lift

Depression can be avoided by mixing with your friends and fellow team members. Many dieters do become depressed when dieting. This can be for several reasons. Your weight loss might be slower than you hoped for or it could be chemical. A sudden drop in calories could leave you feeling down.

Bowling can assist here by helping you build friendships. You get to create good social relationships, which are known to promote better heart performance and good heart performance is a good match with weight loss or control.

So, you see, bowling is not just a great, fun game, it also helps build strength and helps you expend energy, which means calories, and gives you some exercise that you would not otherwise have had.

Cobras

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

The snake called the spitting cobra is one of the most peculiar species as it not only has a venomous bite but it also sprays venom into the eyes of its prey and aggressors. Contact of this venom with your eyes can be very painful and even temporarily blinding, therefore, if you get cobra venom in your eyes, irrigate them immediately in order to prevent permanent tissue damage.

The King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is also remarkable in this large family of snakes (elapidae) because it feeds almost entirely on other snakes with mice and small birds also falling prey to its poison.

The King Cobra is also a record-holder because of its size – it can reach almost twenty feet (585 cms) in length, which makes it the largest poisonous snake in the world. The most recent discovery of a new species of cobra was made in 2003 as part of an illegal shipment of exotic pets at London Zoo.

Going by DNA reports, this new species of snake is similar to the red spitting cobra but differs in genes. It apparently originates from an area between Sudan and Egypt and it has been named the ‘Nubian Spitting Cobra’.

Although they are highly dangerous when threatened cobras will rarely attack if you keep your distance from them, although the spit can travel very accurately for two meters. Compared to the strike of a rattlesnake, the cobra is rather slow in its attack and besides that, many bites prove to be non-venomous.

Statistics of a study conducted on Malaysian cobra snake victims indicate that only 55% of the bites involved poison release and the same statistics indicate a mortality rate of only 10% for people bitten, since the poisons injected into the blood of the prey destroy the nerves (neurotoxins), which induces respiratory failure approximately half an hour after being bitten, so you have 30 minutes to seek help.

The colouration is variable from light green-grey to black, while juveniles are yellow and black banded. This snake can find a habitat all over south-eastern Asia.
