Collecting Antique Dolls

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Collecting antique dolls is a hobby that a lot of women grow into or would like to if they had the time or and the money. A collection of antique dolls in a gorgeous display case is a very attractive asset, but collecting antique dolls is not as easy as it might sound.

Well, to define that properly, it depends what you would like the antique dolls for. As with any hobby that has the capability to make the collector money, it is not easy to get it right, but if you only would like to enjoy your collection you will have an easier time of it.

Millions of women collect old dolls, but it is doubtful that any large number of them actually make any money out of their hobby, because you have to study and the professional competition is fierce. It is the same as collecting coins or stamps: you can have a beautiful collection of pretty commemorative stamps or coins that is worthless in monetary terms, because there were too many of that type or that year manufactured, whereas you could have a collection of a dozen dreary stamps worth a million.

Therefore, if you would like to begin a collection of antique dolls, the first thing to do is visit the library and borrow some books on the issue. If there are no pictures, you can probably find some photos on the Net in order to make identification easier.

One of the first things you require to acquaint yourself with is the names of the most famous makers of dolls in the 150 years of the Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries. Learn the names of the firms, the names of the dolls and an average cost.

If you come across what you think is a good deal at a car boot or yard sale, do not be put off by a shabby appearance. lots of dolls lead a tough life, but they can be repaired fairly easily and there are many dolls’ hospitals if you require expert help, advice or specialist parts like eyes or buttons. The original clothing can be repaired or replaced and the doll would still be valuable if it is rare, popular or sought after.

You know, some things are not particularly rare but are still costly because they capture the imagination of a great deal of people. Baby Boomer toys from the Fifties and Early Sixties will almost certainly acquire this status when the Boomers retire and maybe begin a collection.

Look out for antiques fairs to help you acquire more first hand knowledge. There are often specialized antiques fairs in largish towns and one sort of fair is antique toys, in which the section on antique dolls is certain to feature quite prominently. It is very functional to be able to see the dolls ‘in the flesh’ so to speak in order to know what you should be looking out for while browsing.

Books, photos and the Internet are useful resources, but there is no replacement for hands-on experience and talking with collectors and dealers who are fanatical about collecting antique dolls.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a number of topics, but is now involved with Silver Cross Dolls Prams. If you would like to know more, please go over to our web site at Doll Prams.

Charity Shops And Clear Outs

Sunday, May 1st, 2011

One way of dividing up people that crosses the barriers of age, sex, religion and ethnicity is whether you are a hoarder or not. There are a great deal of hoarders, although some hoarders refer to themselves as collectors or only nostalgic.

That last sentence might be a tad unfair. Collecting can be explained away as a hobby and nostalgia can be thought of as a yearning for days when we were in better shape.

However, what it all boils down to for billions of households is the accumulation of old junk and old clothing. My mother and her mother had decades of clothes that they were sure would come back into fashion one day.

They were almost certainly right and it probably did, but they had to look after the stuff for twenty or thirty years and then teenagers were wearing it, not middle-aged mothers and grandmothers.

My point is that we ought to clear out our closets and wardrobes more frequently in order to create space and pass things on to people who can use them now rather than in twenty years time. I think that closets should be gone through once or twice a year.

Apart from seasonal gear, if you have not worn something for months, there has to be a good reason. Either you do not like it any more; you have gained weight or it does not suit you. So why not pass it on? Write it off and let someone else benefit from it before the moths do.

You could donate them to the Salvation Army, Shelter or any other charity shop or wait for your local church, school or scout brigade to hold a fund-raising bazaar or bring-and-buy sale.

This clears out room for you so that you can see the wood for the trees, allows a charity to profit from your surplus and allows someone more needy than you to wear decent quality clothing at less than the retail cost.

If you have let things drift a little, not to worry. There are charity shops that have racks specializing in old-fashioned gear. They call it retro and there are loads of people who enjoy wearing it.

There are also theatre and film companies scouring the secondhand clothes stores searching for period clothing. One of your old suits could feature in the next Fifties remake!

However, passing your old, decent quality clothing on to charity shops or specialist retro stores, whether you donate or sell them, is only one side of the coin. You can also purchase from these shops.

If you have not been in a charity shop for years or think that you would not be seen dead in one, then you should go along and have a look. They are no longer the sad, amateurish places that they once were. They are run professionally and have a good turnover of stock. They are a particularly decent source of warm winter clothing such as overcoats, so why not do everyone a favour and go and have a look sometime soon?

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on a number of subjects, but is now concerned with the jean jacket. If you would like to know more, please visit our web site at Mens Overcoats For Sale.

When Was Halo 3 Released?

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

On May 15, 2007 the information was published ” the Halo 3 release date would be September 25 in North America and the 26th in Europe. Halo 3 marked the third in a wildly popular series for the Xbox 360 called Halo. According to the vice president of Microsoft’s interactive entertainment business, Halo 3’s publication was more than just a video game release, it was the biggest media event of the year. He may just have been right.

The full history of Halo 3 actually has to start with the publication of the first game in the series ‘Halo: Combat Evolved’. In November, 2001, when Halo was first released, game consoles were somewhat of a joke as one-person shoot-em-up games. Sure, some games existed, but there weren’t the popular communities that the PC games in the genre had.

That all changed with Halo, in which players could fight aliens on foot and in vehicles, in order to complete objectives, while trying to uncover the secret of the Halo. Halo pioneered limiting the number of weapons a player could carry to two, which in turn, meant forcing the player to make strategic decisions.

People waited for the release of Halo 3 with baited breath. They awaited the continuation of the one-person, shoot-em-up combat format that had been dominant in the two former versions of Halo. Microsoft calls it the ‘Golden Triangle of Halo’, which consists of gun-type weapons, grenades and others. In actuality, this was not new to one-person, shoot-em-up games, as it had existed since the very first Doom and even the predecessor to that game, Wolfenstein.

So, with all of that previous history, people were full of anticipation and excitement over the Halo 3 release date. How popular and welcome was the game? Well, before its release, 3.1 million copies were sold in advance orders and retailers were sure that that was insufficient.

The game took over $300 million gross in the United States in only the first seven days. Overall, it has sold over nine million copies worldwide and was the best-selling video game in the USA in 2007. Even the critics liked it, ranking it the seventh highest in the list of Xbox 360 all-time great games.

The Halo 3 release date, like the release date of many wildly popular video games was almost like a national holiday like Christmas or Easter. It leaves us with the question of just what will happen in the realm of video games in the near future?

What Are The Benefits Of An All-Inclusive Vacation?

Saturday, April 9th, 2011

If you are planning to go on vacation this year, how are you thinking of doing it? There are several alternatives to explore, if you begin planning early enough. There are the self-planned, ‘I will find a hotel when I get there’ style; there are cruises and there are package vacations.

The self planned is for those without children and is more bold. Cruises are wonderful, if you like being on the water more than being on land and there are the package holidays, some of which are all-inclusive package vacations.

If you choose a vacation package, you have the alternative of looking for an all-inclusive resort or an all-inclusive hotel. There is not much to choose between them, if you are going alone or with your spouse, but if you are taking children, the all-inclusive resort is the one for you.

This is because all-inclusive hotel rooms can be on the small side and if you have a small child or even children with you, your room will soon become overcrowded and suites are more highly priced. An all-inclusive resort, on the other hand, will normally offer accommodation in the form of cabins or chalets, which are designed with young families in mind.

You do not want to be staying on the 12th floor of a large hotel with toddlers, because either they have to stay in the room until you want to go out, in which case they might get grumpy or they might learn how to get out and wander off in the hotel. A chalet, however, will inevitably be on the ground floor, frequently be in groups, so that you can help keep an eye on each other’s kids and may even have a small garden with a fence.

Whether you go to an all-inclusive hotel or an all-inclusive resort really depends on whether you have or can put up with children. If you have children then a resort is for you, if you do not like children’s noise, then you would be better suited to an all-inclusive vacation in a hotel.

Once you have selected your type of all-inclusive package vacation, the rest is plain sailing. Actually what is all-included in these style hotels and resorts can differ quite widely, so you should make sure you know well in advance. Price is a good indication. If one resort at the same destination is much cheaper than the others, look into it more carefully before booking.

Often the difference will only be in degree. For example, an all-inclusive hotel or resort may offer the free use of diving gear, but when you read on it might restrict that to non-mechanical diving apparatus, so you only get a mask, snorkel and flippers. Others may only have ten units of equipment – first come first served.

However, having said that, most all-inclusive package vacations are fantastic deals. They include your transport to and from your home town to the destination, which depends on you and where the resort is of course. For St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands transport could be by cruise or flight – you must determine that at the outset. Having to travel 500 miles to Orlando by bus or train with three young children might not be much fun.

When you arrive there, they almost always include all your meals and snacks and all soft drinks, tea and coffee, beer and non-branded spirits. An all-inclusive will also include all fees to on-site entertainment. That means the, pool, the club house, pool, snooker, table tennis, the gym etc, and access to any private beach attached to the hotel. It will also include night time shows usually.

Romantic Songs And Dating

Friday, April 8th, 2011

A song can tell you a lot about life, the person who wrote it, the person who sings it and the person who likes to listen to it.. Songs belong to different genres. Have you ever come across a genre which is immortal? If you did would it be about love or hatred? Of course, everybody would say that ‘love’ is the most talked about, written and sung about by people of all races and nationalities. So, it is no surprise then to find out what makes a date worth cherishing?

Music invariably has something to do with it and music could actually style the mood of your date. Dating is such a great way of choosing your future lifetime spouse. When you are out on a date, see to it that the music is well-selected and that it generates a mood of romance.

People have composed all styles of songs, but the ones they write the best are love songs. Since the day the first love song was sung, people’s hearts have been melting. Songs of finding a new love, losing love, songs of inspiration, songs of moving on, songs about romance, first loves and the gush of emotions.

With all due respect to all the artists concerned and their fans too, here are some of the most popular songs of Romance. They demonstrate the feelings of two people in love during a very romantic date:

Truly, Madly, Deeply: (Savage Garden) – this duo’s song speaks about a deep love and promises made to the other person.

I’d be your dream I’d be your wish I’d be your fantasy I’d be your hope, be your love Be everything that you need

This I Promise You: (N-Sync) – this group filled the airwaves with love. This song is really a pledge of a lifetime’s dedication. It is often used as a wedding song.

And I will take you in my arms And hold you right where you belong Until the day my life is through This I promise you

Iris: (Goo Goo Dolls) – it gained popularity not only because of the movie in which it featured, but because the song touches the heart.

And I don’t want the world to see me ‘Cause I don’t think that they’d understand When everything’s made to be broken- I just want you to know who I am

Dreaming of You: (Selina) – the singer died tragically, but the song lives on. It is a light song, but it goes straight to the heart.

I’m dreaming of you tonight ‘Til tomorrow And for all of my life And there?s nowhere in the world I’d rather be.

Songs will always be a big part of courtship and that usually starts with a date. Music is the food of love and music is one of the greatest inventions of mankind. Generations always have, and generations always will, continue to keep the tradition going. Music not only induces love and romance, but it also keeps love and romance alive.

Teeth Whitening Using Lasers

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

In the modern world, many treatments are made easier by the use of lasers. Teeth whitening is no exception and laser teeth whitening is now one of the options that people have if they want to have whiter teeth.

Laser teeth whitening is best for those who want to have it done effortlessly and quickly, because, unlike other methods of teeth whitening, you do not need to wait days or weeks to enjoy the results of the treatment. You will notice that when the laser treatment is completed your teeth are whiter than they were an hour before. Many people choose this option because of the immediate results that it brings. If you need to be in a presentation where you want people to see how beautiful your smile is, this is the best method you can achieve it.

How does laser teeth whitening work?

1. Teeth Cleaning: The dental technician will begin the process of whitening by cleaning your teeth. This is very important because the plaque and germs that are present on your teeth can have a major effect on the whitening process. The outcome of the treatment is greatly affected by the present state of your teeth. That is why they have to be cleaned first of all.

2. Application of Whitening Gel and Laser Treatment: Once your teeth have been cleaned, the dentist will put the whitening gel on your teeth. After the gel is applied, you will then be positioned for the laser treatment. The purpose of the laser here is to enhance the whitening process of the gel. Without laser, it would take several minutes or even hours before the gel can penetrate your teeth. With laser, the whitening ingredients in the gel are immediately activated so that it produces results in a matter of seconds.

However, for extreme cases of discolouration, one session is usually not enough to achieve the desired result. Sometimes, the person is required to come return for some more sessions before the change in the teeth colour becomes noticeable. But for those who have mild teeth discolouration, one session is usually enough.

Is laser whitening right for everyone?

As with all professional teeth whitening treatments, you can expect to pay a higher price for laser treatment than for over-the-counter remedies. Laser teeth whitening can be as expensive as any other technician-assisted method and if you are used to the whitening products that you can buy from stores, you will be surprised at the cost of professional laser teeth whitening. It should be noted that the price varies from clinic to clinic, but if you want to get the best deal for your money, you should do some extra research to find out which one is offering the most competitive price.

You will find many opportunities of laser teeth whitening clinics to choose from on the Internet, but before selecting one, go over all the advertisements so that you do not lose out on any of the other great deals there might be. If you are intent on having a great Hollywood smile, you can set up a savings account just for the laser teeth whitening session. After you see the results, you will not regret it and you can say that your money was well spent. Just think of it this way: why spend over and over again on something that will take longer when you can spend once on laser teeth whitening and have an immediate and great smile?

Selecting A Screen For Your Home Theater

Monday, October 11th, 2010

If you are considering setting up a home theater system, then there are three basic components to consider. They are the screen, the speakers and the player. Two of these components are directly linked to the dimensions of the room in which you will be sitting and where you will be seated.

All DVD players over a certain price are fairly good and you ought to listen to a couple to make up your mind. The same with speakers, although how many you will need is dependent on the dimensions of the room. The screen is more important and that is what I want to talk about here.

It will not actually be of very much help to you to just walk into a department store which stocks fifty or sixty television sets all in rows. You may find that you have a preference for one screen’s colour display over another, but the colours are controllable anyway by brightness, contrast and colour mix. You need to view the screen as it will be seen in your home theater.

In order to do this, I always recommend getting a pen, paper, preferably graph paper, and a rule. Draw in the dimensions of the room to the largest scale that the sheet of paper allows, maybe one inch for two feet or there abouts. Then draw a line to symbolize the screen against whichever wall you choose and finally add a few squares for the seats. Now measure the space between them and write that figure down, because it is very important.

Using our scale above, if the gap on paper between the screen and the seats is five inches, the distance in the room will be ten feet and ten feet is 120 inches. A good rule of thumb, when trying to work out screen size is the same one used for paintings, which is that the ideal viewing distance of a picture is between three and five times its diagonal measurement. Therefore, in our example, the ideal screen size should be between 40 and 24 inches. However, many experts put a minimum screen size for a home theater at 28 inches.

That may come as a bit of a surprise to many of you, because a lot of people think that the solution is the bigger the better. However, primed with this information, now go to the TV store and look at the TV’s again. You will find that if you get up too close to some sorts of screen the picture becomes rather poor, particularly with conventional television screens. Plasma and HDTV allow you to get a little closer without losing quality.

Another factor is your age, or at least, the quality of your eyesight. Would you rather watch the film with your glasses on or off? Off for me, so I would tend towards the higher end of our scale or maybe even go above it. My eyes are not going to get any better, but I can always put my glasses on when the time comes that I cannot see my screen properly any longer. However, I want to put that time off for a while yet, so I would go for a 48 inch screen in this illustration for my home theater. Plasma, if I could afford it.

Halo 3

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

Recently while searching the Internet for information on the Halo 3 weapons cheats, I came across a number of what-if scenarios? What if Master Chief took on different famous characters from movies, comic books, and legends? Here is a list of some of these battles and my idea of the result.

Although it is technically not a Halo 3 weapon cheat, the contest between Master Chief versus Robocop would be hot. According to the information on the Internet both have some similarities. They’re both human, they’ve both been enhanced, they both have amazing armour and they are both veteran combatants. Most respondents predicted that Master Chief would beat Robocop, but let’s face facts here, Master Chief can be defeated with a pistol, whereas Robocop was still going after being blown up at a petrol station. The victor has to be Robocop.

If Master Chief took on the next fighter he would need to have a Halo 3 weapon cheat. The next is MacGyver. Master Chief has a lot of advantages. He is proficient with a number of weapons; he has that fantastic armour; he has some incredible vehicles at his disposal; he’s a Clint Eastwood type loner and he can repair himself. However, in short, MacGyver is brain over brawn. It would probably boil down to the same considerations in a fight between Batman and Superman. However, if it’s a closed arena where it’s man versus man, Master Chief is going to win. But put this battle in the real world with Swiss army knives and plastic tape at his disposal, and MacGyver’s going to wipe the floor with our bionic friend.

So far Master Chief is 2-0 down, it’s beginning to look like he could really use a Halo 3 weapon cheat. But let’s give him another chance. This time it’s Master Chief versus Terminator. We already know Master Chief’s powers, the Terminator’s consist of an ability to master any weapon, relentless willpower, doesn’t get tired, amazing detrermination to kill his prey. It all comes down to the Spartan laser weapon. As one respondent said, if Master Chief can destroy vehicles with this weapon he can certainly put a sizeable hole in the Terminator too.

OK, let’s have another contest before Master Chief discovers his Halo 3 weapon cheat. How can he do in battle against Boba Fett from Star Wars? The major differences between Master Chief and Boba Fett are that Boba has no shield, owns his own ship and has a jet pack (wow).

Many people believe Star Wars comes out on top in this battle, but Master Chief’s weapons are much more powerful than those shown by the bounty hunter. This one makes it two all, Master Chief goes 50-50.

So, those are the results of the survey – the people have spoken. In this small poll that we found on the Internet, Master Chief is your average type of super hero, who is not guaranteed to win every single fight, unless he finds his weapon cheats or the story writers want him to, that is.

The Need For Patio Heaters In Business

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

If you own a restaurant, pub or any business using outdoor amenities in a temperate climate zone, then you will know that custom is likely to drop off when the weather gets cooler. You know that you would not sit outside shivering yourself, so you do not count on anyone else to do it. The only answer is to modify the outdoor ambient temperature to an acceptable level.

I have seen this done to stunning effect in Prague in October when there were heavy snow storms. People wanted to sit outside and enjoy the snow storm as long as they were pretty warm. A person’s primary heat comes from the body and is kept in with sufficient clothing, but it is nice to have a patio heater near-by just to add a glow to your face and hands.

If you have a business that only operates when it is warm enough, then you have an expensive business and these days expensive businesses do not survive long. You need to wring every last cent out of your business real estate and if that means putting patio heaters in, then that is what you ought to do.

Patio heaters come in a range of guises, but they are not that expensive to buy. Sometimes you can rent them too. Most of these outdoor heaters run on bottles of propane or butane gas, but there are mains gas varieties too. There are also electric ones, but they tend to be costly to run, unless you can generate your own electricity.

I think that the best two types are the box type where the gas cylinder goes inside the device and the heat is directed at foot to knee height and the street lantern style, where the heat comes down from about seven or eight feet in height. The gas cylinder also fits inside these models lowering their centre of gravity and making them harder to unintentionally knock over.

These heaters are very safe although patrons should be advised to exercise care if they have young children with them. A standard heater will keep up to two tables and eight people warm enough to enjoy themselves even while it is snowing.

The hire of a few of these patio heaters or even their purchase will soon be off-set by your augmented trade, especially if your competitors are not using them. My wife and I will never forget our time in Prague, when it was snowing, drinking coffee and eating cake outside, watching people go by while we were as warm as toast because of the restaurateur’s foresight in providing patio heaters.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with the propane outdoor heater. If you are interested in patio heaters too, please click through to Residential Patio Heaters.

Picnic Or Barbecue?

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

Are you considering throwing a party in the near future, but are not sure whether to have a picnic in the park or a barbecue party at home? People do enjoy both forms of party, although some may have a first choice. One of the big differences between a picnic and a barbecue is often the food.

After all, you are usually permitted to have a barbecue and cook food in your own backyard, but there may be bylaws on cooking food on an open fire in a park or picnic site for fire safety purposes, so most people take pre-cooked meats and sandwiches.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both kinds of party, but we will start by looking at the food aspect, as most parties centre around food. An advantage of having a picnic is that you will be able to muck in with your fellow picnickers more, because you will have already cooked the chicken wings and legs and completed the sandwiches the night before.

You will have bags of sausage rolls and small cakes and all you will have to do is put them out for people to help themselves. If you run out of sandwiches, people can make their own with the sliced bread that you will have brought just in case.

The disadvantages of a picnic are that you also have to tie your time up the day before making all the food and you will need transport to get there with your hampers, bottles, flasks, plates, beakers, tissues, flannels towels and whatever else you usually take with you. People may not even like your choice of sandwiches and if you let them make their own with what you supply, there could be a terrible mess. Your sandwiches could also curl up overnight of go bad in the heat of the day or in the back of the car. This is a very real danger with pork, chicken and eggs.

You may have to put up a tent or rig up a shelter for those who can not stand strong sunlight. You may also have trouble with ants and wasps and the toilet amenities are often dreadful. Also if it starts to rain, you have little choice but to pack up and leave for home or a pub

Barbecue food on the other hand is cooked there and then and cannot spoil. The only danger is under cooking, but it is not too difficult to get it right. There is not much likelihood of preparing vast quantities more than you require either as the chef will see when his food is not being taken away.

This is one of the disadvantages of barbecuing though, someone has to stand there all day and cook, although this can be done in turns and there is usually a string of men willing to show off their expertise as a barbecue chef.

With a barbecue you have the advantage of cover if it rains and the toilets are better than in the park and if it gets chilly later on in the evening, you could use a patio heater to extend the party.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with the outdoor heat lamp. If you are interested in patio heaters too, please click through to Residential Patio Heaters.
