Choosing the right laptop – netbook, mid-sized or larger
Friday, July 29th, 2011When it comes to choosing a new laptop, the number of decisions to be made can prove intimidating. You need to decide on software, operating system, hard disk space, processor speed and screen size. To ensure you get exactly the machine that you need, it is best to try and identify what you want and then try and stick to those requirements without getting distracted.
Screen size is a major consideration. Netbooks have screens that are 8.9″ or 10.1″ or thereabouts. Larger laptops might have screens as large as 17″ or 18″ and then there are many options in between as well.
If you want a portable laptop for a bit of internet browsing and for checking your emails, you don’t need anything too powerful. A small netbook ought to be sufficient. Very small models such as the Dell Mini are light and suitable if you’re not planning on spending large amounts of time online or playing games.
When it comes to mid-sized laptops, the Dell Inspiron 1545 might fit the bill. This 15.6″ screen model is an incredibly popular choice, having been backed by a huge ad campaign when it first came out, supported by a low price. A mid-sized laptop such as this is a good all-rounder – good for work and entertainment and portable at the same time.
Of larger laptops, many people go for the Dell Vostro 3700. With a 17.3″ screen, it is perhaps more geared towards gamers and people using design software, but it does allow you to have multiple windows open without your having to flick between them. Set against that is the fact that it is not quite so portable, due to its size.
If you ever need to replace a Dell laptop screen if yours is faulty or because the panel cracks, there are always options. Screen replacements are pretty easy to carry out, but it is still better to get someone to do it for you. A local repair shop should be able to carry out the work without too much trouble. Alternatively, there is plenty of advice on the internet if you want to try and do the job yourself.
